Sealand
Sealand is an independent state created by owners Roy and Joan Bates in 1966.

Since then the former Second World War Royal Navy Fort, situated eight miles off the coast of Harwich, has been in the headlines as the smallest country in the world.

The platform measures just 140m by 40m.

Roy and Joan Bates, who live in Westcliff, turned it into Radio Essex, a pirate radio station.

Mr Bates later began issuing his own stamps, coins and passports for the state of Sealand.

But Britain has never recognised the fort as being an independent sovreign state.

The official website can be reached through www.sealandgov.com
